WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT IN LIFE, HAVING A PHONE OR HAVING DREAM?
On average, Americans touch their phone over 2600 times per day, but how many times do we touch our dreams?
When I asked this question to room of about 100 people last month during a presentation, it was meant to be a rhetorical question to awaken people to our messed up priorities.
Nonetheless I did heard some replies such as :
“not even a quarter of that”
“maybe once a day”
As bad as the answer may be, I don’t believe technology is the problem. The problem is our mindset. Many people have forgotten their meaning in life and are chasing the wrong thing. In my humble opinion, I believe most people use their phone as a distraction to avoid the fact that they are not living a fulfilling life by pursuing their dreams.
what is The Biggest Regret People Have About Their Life?
Bronnie Ware, an Australian nurse and counselor, spent years taking care of terminally ill people. Most of them had 12 weeks or less to live. As part of therapy, she would ask them about any regrets they had about their lives. She asked if there was anything they would do differently if given a second chance.
She discovered that the number one regret the dying have about their life is:
“I wish I pursued my dreams and aspirations, and not the life others expected of me”
Will that be you? I sincerely hope not.
As we roll into this New Year I challenge you to dig a little deeper this time around and go after what you really want in life. Yes, I want you to lost weight and eat healthier but I really want you to go after that big dream of yours. Because that is one of the keys to sparking achieving all of your goals. You need something audacious and inspiring to launch you out of bed each morning.
Yes it may be scary, you may have given up hope in the past, but right now if you can read this and are still breathing it is not too late.
Last year I achieved my childhood dream of becoming a professional athlete. Trust me, there was a point I had given up hope when I was frustrated working a jobs I hated for nearly 10 years. Numbing myself in alcohol, tv and fast food. But when I made the decision to truly go after my dream, when I said this is the only option, no plan b, that is when I became successful.
I obsessively studies the keys to success and along the path I found some simple yet effective principles to achieve massive success.
These 3 steps will help you get unstuck, uncover your purpose in life and achieve your biggest dreams.
But you have to focus!
Put the phone on airplane mode, grab a notebook, put your headphones on and lock in!
#1 Meditation: uncover your life’s purpose by going within
The starting point to any journey is having a clear destination. Meditation is one of the most effective paths to gaining clarity about our life’s purpose. It’s helps you hear your inner voice and connect with the universe.
For those unfamiliar with meditation, all you have to do is find a quiet place, sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes and begin taking deep breaths. Don’t think about anything, just focus on your breathing.
Another form of meditation I have used to uncover purpose is visualization. At the beginning of my journey I read the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In the book, Stephen Covey suggests using a visualization activity where by imagining our own funeral we can gain clarity into our life’s purpose. Consider what you want to people to say about you when you're gone. What do you want to be remembered for? Begin with the end in mind. Start there and work your way back to the present.
#2 Journaling: writing down your life’s purpose, Dreams and goals.
Once you what you truly want out of life, write it down. I suggest writing in the inside cover of your journal so you can view everyday. You can also make a copy to post on your wall or vision board if you have one.
Begin each day by writing down your daily goals. Write 1 or 2 things you will do that day to get you closer to your big dream.
What does the research say? There was a study done where they took 267 people there were men and women from all over the world, and from all walks of life. What they discovered in this study was that you become 42% more likely to achieve your goals and dreams by simply writing them down and reciting them on a regular basis.
Writing it down also forces you to be specific and clear on what you really want, and shows that you are really serious about it.
When you write down your dream, it becomes tangible. You can see it and touch it. Touch your dream everyday, multiple times a day!
# 3 Affirmations: Speak it and Believe it.
Now that you have written down your dream and goals, it’s time create affirmations and speak them into existence.
An affirmation is a powerful statement that you speak with confidence. For example: “I am a professional athlete” ... “I am a CEO” ... “I am in excellent health”….“I am wealthy”
Whatever your dreams are, turn them into powerful statements that you can speak into existence. Read and repeat your affirmations first thing in the morning and last thing before you go to bed at night. Read them multiple times throughout the day to keep your mind focused on what you truly desire.
You can also listen to affirmations which is another great way to reinforce the habits and results you want to attain. I regularly listen to affirmations when I’m walking to the train or going for a run. I put together a success affirmation video which you can used while you workout or any time you need a boost. I recommend listening to this with headphones and playing it multiple times a day.
Congratulations you have just received my master keys to success. Now understand this, I can give you the keys to the lamborghini, but it’s on you to drive it.
It’s time to take massive action. Experts have suggested that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. So as you begin to depart on your journey, commit to at least 21 days of your best effort. Believe and trust the process. There will be ups and downs, but just keep going.
